Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my garden plot number?
You can view Picardo garden maps HERE.
Why is it called a P-Patch?
P-Patch is the name given to the City of Seattle's community gardens. The name commemorates the Picardo family who operated a farm dedicated to growing produce for market in the Wedgwood area in the early twentieth century. In 1973, part of the former farm was acquired from the Picardo family and became the first community garden in Seattle - the Picardo Farm P-Patch.
How and where do I record my volunteer hours?
Enter your hours at the City P-Patch site. You will have to create a username and password. This is also where you pay your yearly P-Patch fee.
How many volunteer hours do I need to complete per year?
Each gardener needs to complete 8 volunteer hours by October 31. There are numerous ways to get your hours. Find a work party or event HERE or reach out to the garden leadership team.
What do I do with my weeds/garden waste?
The West Compost intake bins are currently open, but can get easily overfilled, therefore we encourage gardeners to compost in their own plots.
Some easy ways to do this are:
cut up your debris into small pieces and reuse it as mulch
put it in a black plastic bag or cover with burlap and let it break down
bury bigger stalks deep in the soil and let the worms do their work
take it home to your own compost bin to go into the larger composting ecosystem
Where is the bathroom?
Our one-of-a kind composting toilet, The Picaloo, is located in the northeast corner of the garden, next to the orchard. A spigot and soap are outside for handwashing.
Where are the first aid kits?
Two bee sting kits can be found in the Sharing Shed and pinned to the cork board in the Barn.
The first aid kit can be found in a clear bin on the first shelf in the barn. It’s on your right as you walk in the door.
What is the lock code?
Email Milton Tam or ask a fellow gardener. Keep it in your phone or somewhere handy so you remember it.
Who do I contact if I want to volunteer for something or have a project idea?
Take a look at the Contact List to see who the leaders are for specific areas and projects in the garden. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, contact Milton Tam.
I’m going out of town. Can someone else garden my plot while I’m gone?
Yes, absolutely, but if you will be gone an extended amount of time (more than two weeks), you and your plot steward need to take some steps.
Option 1 is to add the person as a co-gardener. They will need to sign up here at P-Patch Community Gardening - Neighborhoods | seattle.gov. Once they've created a profile then they must let Nate Moxley, our P-Patch Office Community Gardening Coordinator, know so he can add them as a co-gardener.
Option 2 is to have them create a P-Patch profile and then added as an official steward by Nate. Ideally plot stewards and co-gardeners are on the listserv as well so they're in the loop on important items that come up like noxious plant alerts, hornets nests or community events.
How do I donate my extra produce?
Put produce you’d like to donate in the Sharing Shed, located on the north side of the garden. Cleaning instructions and the delivery pickup schedule are HERE.
Where is the trash?
There are no trash receptacles at Picardo. Please keep our garden tidy and take your garbage with you.
